My friend's mother commented on a run down part of town
"The industrial district" she called it
She said nobody lived there, so it didn't matter
If only she knew what I'd seen
Just down the street from the Ford plant, there's a Train station
Walking through it in the dead of winter at 5am, wishing I had change or even a blanket
For the mother and her children huddled around a heating vent
Because they had nowhere else to go
Nobody to turn to
Nobody lives here
The city turned a deaf ear to their calls for help
When their home was taken, and they had no family to speak of
She was right
Nobody lives here
There were at least 20 homeless people in that train station alone
Propped up against walls, sleeping with no home
Just remember
Nobody lives here
If my friend's mom had seen these people, I'm sure she'd think differently
At least I think she would
She cares so much about her family
But maybe she'd just try to forget
And keep saying to herself
Nobody lives here
