Why do you give this back to me?
I gave it for you to keep
Why have you bruised it with your hands
I don't want it back bruised and broken
I'll take this part that is bruised
And work it back into health
But you hold onto the good part
Always, just for fun
I gave it to you, and meant forever
It is not yours to give back
So keep it safe and hold it close to yours
Through all that you do
I hope it can teach you something
And give you courage in the future
If not - just tuck it away in a safe place
It will remain there always
Still loving you and watching over your own
Helping it to heal when it becomes bruised

A heartbreaking poem, although I've always found the term 'Indian Giver' offensive to my ancestors.
