I tried to hold tight
I tried to be strong
Just to hold you
Through the night
Hours grew wide
Thirsty with blood
Coughing up lies
Never understood
Your fever took high
Your tongue cut deep
I buried my bruises
As you fell to sleep
Sweaty wet and warm
Eyes squeazed tightly
You struck at the dark
But all you hit was me
I tried to hold tight
I tried to be strong
Just to hold you
Through the night
And in the hour of the dawn
Your demons burned to dust
Your mind cool and clear
You asked me where I was
Silently you cried and said
I wasn’t beside your bed
Holding your hand or head
You never knew, nor will ever
I pushed and carried you through
But in the end, in the glaring light
I stepped away, afraid of you
I tried to hold tight
I tried to be strong
Just to hold you
Through the night
